Unlocking Affordable Solar Power: DIY Concave Mirror Construction
In this video, I showcase a DIY concave mirror made from affordable materials, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional solar energy conversion methods. The mirror is constructed using reflective film and steel rod mesh, significantly reducing production costs. Despite its low cost, the mirror effectively concentrates solar radiation, reaching temperatures exceeding 300°C. I address common misconceptions regarding the effectiveness and durability of the mirror, emphasizing its potential applications in energy production and agriculture. Additionally, I discuss the challenges that would need to be addressed by startups interested in mass-producing these mirrors, including film durability and wrinkle removal techniques. Overall, this DIY concave mirror presents a promising avenue for sustainable energy production and demonstrates the power of innovative, cost-effective solutions.
Bamboo Adiabatic Air Conditioner for Urban Spaces
Vietnam is highly vulnerable to climate change, with coastal cities facing heatwaves that increase energy demand and emissions, making public spaces unlivable.
In 2021, we entered the Seoul Architecture competition to find a sustainable outdoor cooling solution. Modern ACs are energy-intensive and harmful to the environment. We sought a low-tech, eco-friendly alternative using the adiabatic principle, which cools air through water evaporation.
Combining traditional Vietnamese craftsmanship with modern digital design, we used bamboo to create our cooling device.
We designed a bamboo tower where water cools the air through evaporation. Testing in Hanoi showed our design could lower outdoor temperatures by 6°C, demonstrating its potential for urban cooling.
